The Renaissance followed on from the Middle Ages and was for musicians an era of discovery, innovation and exploration - the name means ‘rebirth’. It covers the music from 1400 to 1600.

Baroque- 1600-1750
The Baroque period saw an explosion of new musical styles with the introduction of the concerto, the sonata and the opera.

Classical 1750-1830
The Classical era in the history of music specifically refers to the period when composers such as Haydn, Mozart and Beethoven were active, championing the symphony, composing comic operas, and developing the piano sonata.

Romantic 1830-1900
The Romantic era is known for its intense energy and passion. The rigid forms of classical music gave way to greater expression, and music grew closer to art, literature and theatre.
